Greece. From Socrates to Zorba. Fresh vegetables, goat cheese, red wine and Greek beer. Welcoming the visitor into her homes. Great art and architecture. Poetry. Olympians, democracy. Her people, her othodoxy and her great history of thought and perseverance.
And her islands...each one unique with one eye to its sustainability and the other to its history. So much has remained unchanged – a spartan wooden fishing fleet, burros bearing groceries or firewood, tenacious stucco buildings crawling up the hillsides. Yet a tangle of modern wiring hangs from the improbable telephone pole and a motorbike races along a narrow stone path. It is the people of the Greek Isles that gave birth to Western civilization more than 5,000 years ago.
